Orpheus, bard, storyteller extraordinaire
fell in love with Eurydice, so fair
he sung to her of godly deeds
of warriors who paid the Twelve no heed
they sat for hours, bard and girl
of many couples, they were the pearl
husband and wife, soon to be
until Fate snatched Eurydice
Orpheus the poet, distraught with grief
wept for days with no relief
so down to the underworld Orpheus went
to see if Pluto would be such a gent
who would return bride to be, alive
said Pluto “of Eurydice you won’t be deprived,
but to this condition you must agree
consent and she will be free.
You must leave and not look back
and Eurydice will follow your tracks.
But, if you turn and glance behind
your fiancee isn’t what you will find.
Looking back will end badly for both
and to this I’ll make an oath
You, Orpheus, will have an unending life
While down here with me will stay your wife.”
Agreeing, the bard walked away
with the end in sight, he was filled with dismay
the poet pondered the truth of Pluto’s words
he began to worry if he correctly he had heard
tempted so, Orpheus stopped mid stride
looking back, the storyteller glimpsed his bride
but that one glance cost him his love
alone, Orpheus returned to the world above
while Eurydice returned to the underworld below
and still separated by his failing of the quid pro quo
